Halal Finance Quest: Riba, Gharar and Maysir
Play your way through the three great prohibitions of Islamic finance
Introductory · 5 hours · 11 lessons · Language: English and Arabic · ID: IFS-COU-0069
Play your way through the three great prohibitions of Islamic finance. This free gamified course turns the basics of AAOIFI standards into five interactive missions. In each one you flip learning cards, make decisions in short scenarios, race through true-or-false rounds, match terms, put steps in order, sort what is allowed from what is not, and finish with a final challenge where you have three lives. You earn XP, keep streaks, collect stars and unlock a badge for every mission.
The missions:
- Why Islamic finance is different
- Riba in loans and debts
- Riba in exchanges: currencies and gold
- Gharar: too much uncertainty
- Maysir, speculation and halal alternatives
After each mission a short recap sums up what you unlocked, with the references. When all five badges are yours, take the final exam: 30 questions in 60 minutes, 70% to pass.
This course is independent educational material written by ifSPACE in its own words. It does not reproduce AAOIFI texts, is not affiliated with AAOIFI and is not a fatwa.
What you will learn
- Explain how Islamic finance earns a lawful return through trade, leasing and partnership, and name its three great prohibitions: riba, gharar and maysir.
- Recognise riba in loans and debts, including hidden benefits, size-linked fees, balance-linked gifts and increases for late payment, as AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard No. 19 describes them.
- Apply the rules of equality and spot exchange to currencies and gold, and identify forwards, options and deferred gold sales that Shari'ah Standard No. 1 does not allow.
- Judge when uncertainty is excessive gharar that spoils a contract, using the four tests of Shari'ah Standard No. 31, and show how precise terms make a deal clear.
- Distinguish ordinary investing from maysir, screen and purify shares under Shari'ah Standard No. 21, and choose halal alternatives such as sukuk, partnerships and fair prize schemes.
